Found in South America, from Venezuela to Argentina, this is by far the largest of all the armadillos, weighing over 120 pounds with a body length of 40 inches. They are nocturnal, with a diet of mostly ants, termites and insects but will also eat snakes. When threatened, they will often try to dig to escape as, unlike other armadillos, they cannot completey enclose themselves for protection.
