Homoptera have the dubious distinction of being probably the most destructive of all insects. They include aphids, leafhoppers, cicadas, and scale insects, a group of roughly 45,000 species in total.
Cicadas were used in traditional folk medicine as a diuretic by peasants in Provênce, their shed skins used as cures for earache in China and Japan. Even today, an unusually colored species is commonly used by the Chinese for a variety of medicinal purposes.
In addition, many of the Heteroptera are predatory and some are useful as controllers of plant pests.
Lanternflies are differentiated from Cicadas by antennae located on the side of the head beneath the compound eyes and not in front of or between the eyes as in the Cicadas.

The most distinctive feature of many family members are the long head which may be very strangely shaped. They also have piercing-sucking mouth parts and the antennae directly beneath the eyes on the side of the head.
